Gimme some bootay ;)

Every body wants to be skinny. Scratch that. Every white folk, wants to be skinny. You already know that. But not us black folk. Women with big err… dash-boards and big err… back sides are glorified everyday. In music videos, on billboards, magazines. So where does this leave us, the girls who are not well endowed in either departments?

I was this gal. The skinny girl. I got criticized as much as the fat girls. Wait, I heard they are called phat girls these days. The society raises an eyebrow when you call plus size people fat, but feel nothing when they discriminate against skinny people. Talk about double standards. **rolls eyeballs** Every social event that I attended, my weight or the lack there of was brought up. At home, my Dad was always complaining that I wasn’t eating enough. Sometimes it got personal. I don’t need to indulge you on what this did to my self esteem. That is mostly in the past. Things are different now, and I thought, in the spirit of my blog, refer to my first blog post: that I would share my experience to help another who might be dealing with this silently.

I could take a whole day narrating to you the things that I tried in a quest to gain weight, but I will spare you the shock. I remember when some relatives came over to visit my family after my mother was buried, they left us some money and my first thought was to buy a weight gain supplement. Yes, that was all I was thinking about even after such an event. Weight gain. If you are reading this piece and you are a plus size person, I hope it consoles you to know that even skinny people have issues with their weight. As unreal as this may sound.

So, what are the causes of weight loss? What can one do to gain weight? I will try to answer these questions not from a place of authority, rather from a place of experience and also from what I have learnt from people around me.

Causes of weight loss

1. Traumatic experiences: Anything that has traumatized you in any way. The death of a loved one, a nasty relationship break up, sudden change in your career path, a bad accident and…[kindly insert any other reason here]. These may result in weight loss.
2. Illness: This is for both terminal and kawaida (usual) illnesses. Needless to say, the pain, physical trauma and discomfort that come with illnesses always result in change of apetite. For most people illness results in loss of apetite which consequently results in weight loss.
3. Genes: This is how you are wired. It is how most people in your family are. So you are basically more on the slim side. But you find that you are underweight. Please use this BMI calculator to find out.
4. Poor eating habits: Girls, you can not refuse to eat, and expect your body to remain the same. Eating one slice of bread is not eating. Tough love. ๐Ÿ™‚
5. Complicated eating conditions such as anorexia, bulemia et ce tera. For these ones, I suggest you see a specialist. Siwess meck it. :p

How to gain weight

1. Eat: I had to fall in love with food. To be honest, I used to subconsciously think that a girl should not eat certain amounts of food. Eat that which your heart desires. Whether icecream, yoghurt, maryland biscuits (my gosh, these biscuits are made in heaven, if you doubt me, check the label)… Ladies, it is okay to love food and eat it.
2. Find God. Traumatic events happen to one and all. They are not discriminatory. Life is hard. Life is tough. But so are you. And God will help you wade through these trying times. The peace that you find from knowing God is so important. Having a relationship with God not only gives you hope but makes you a fulfilled human being.
3. Forgive easily. To a fault, even. What does gaining weight and forgiving people have to do with each other you ask. Ladies, ask around. Bitterness is the cancer of the soul. Unforgiveness and bitterness will have so many negative effects on your life. Weight loss included. When you are at peace with yourself your body shows. You have this glow. Your beauty simply radiates.
4. Sleep: Are you sleeping for 4 hours a night? This is where you are going wrong. Dr. Me (I just coined that) :p says that you should sleep atleast 7 to 8 hours a night. When we sleep our body gets the chance to get replenished, refreshed, refilled, rejuvenated and renewed. If you find that you are struggling to sleepโ€”what many refer to as insomnia, please find out why. I will tell you one thing though, I don’t know what insomnia is, is it a wild animal? Is it a city somewhere in the world? (all said on a light note) I love my sleep. And I’m greatful that this has never been my problem. All the best in getting this sorted out.
5. Love what you do, and do what you love. This is the attitude part. Attitude is a choice. Yes, I will repeat that again. Attitude is a choice. If you find that you are mostly a negative and pessimistic person, kindly go back to the drawing board. The occassional bad day rant is excused in any planet, but you cannot be a 24-7-365 pessimist. This attitude thing is as bad as unforgiveness.
6. Exercise/workout/gym. How I started going to the gym is a story I will tell you someday. Before I started going to the gym, I
thought the gym was the place for the fat, flabby, overweight, old women who have 4 children and are now trying to get back in shape. I didn’t know how wrong I was.

Girls, if you want to get a perfect body you MUST work out. Walk, jog, run, do aerobics or just go to the gym. Again, I can only speak from experience. I went to the gym, sat down with my instructor and shared my objectives. I was at the gym for two reasons. One, to tone up and two, to gain weight. (I was losing weight as a result of an event in my life) The first thing he told me was I had to be consistent and the second thing was that I had to eat well. Well here, means good healthy food. After working out for a week, my apetite hit an all time high. I would get home and wolf down food in quantities that I have previously only seen my Dad eat. Yes, I started eating well, because I was working out well. Another thing, I started hydrating. I was this girl who used to drink water only when I have hiccups. Don’t laugh. I am as serious as a heart attack. After I started working out, I would do a minimum of 1 litre of water a day. Kindly note: weights can also be lifted by girls. I like to call them dambells (sp). By the way, with a good work out program you will find the sleep issue sorted out. Working out improves one’s sleeping patterns.

Ladies. Try “this at home”. Eat, but remember to eat well. We live in the day of diabetes and cancer. So be careful about that. If you forget everything else I have shared here, don’t forget to start working out. Be consistent. Patient. Give it a month. Keep reminding yourself that you are doing your part, and the weight gain will surely follow. By the way, a little extra tip. Compliment your body with nice beautiful clothes that suit your body. If you look good, you will feel good. Go for bright colors. They improve your moods. In the words of one hip hop artist known to many as Drake, “thank me later”.

Just so you know, I love my booty ๐Ÿ˜‰
